As in a successful horror movie, the spine-tingling elements and vivid characters are effective not simply on their own terms, but because of their careful deployment at just the right moment in the narrative. Two key narrative choices are made in these books of The Odyssey : Homer hands the storytelling reins over to Odysseus, and Odysseus decides to create a suspenseful tale rather than a straightforward one. It is these narrative decisions that make the so-called special effects in this section so convincing.
By allowing Odysseus to tell these stories in the first-person, rather than narrating them in the third person, Homer draws the reader in and creates a sense of immediacy. Like them, we find ourselves leaning forward to hear what will happen next. He has a variety of tactics for creating suspense, one of the most effective of which involves forcing the audience to wait for key information. Odysseus also has a knack for intentionally inspiring unease in his audience. Like a movie director who knows that the sudden appearance of a murderer will be even more terrifying if it is preceded by two minutes of silence, Odysseus understands the value of setting an eerily perfect scene that signals the approach of a disaster.
The idyllic quality of the scene is unsettling, giving us a pleasant thrill of fear in anticipation of what will happen next. Books 9 through 12 of The Odyssey are filled with first-rate special effects: blood and bones, cruel giants, daring escapes, sexually ravenous sorceresses, and more. But carelessly deployed, these same effects could make up the ingredients of a tawdry melodrama. It is the skill with which they are embedded in the narrative that makes them spring off the page in such a compelling fashion. Ace your assignments with our guide to The Odyssey! Odysseus was well known for being a hero. He has the qualities of being a hero in some situations but also has flaws which make him seem less of a hero at times. Being loyal, clever, and dedicated are examples of being a heroic person. No matter what is thrown at him he never stops trying to get home, getting past a Cyclopes, the Lady Circe, and sirens. He even gets through the Underworld and lives. Despite this, Odysseus does have faults about him, though not as many as there are qualities.
He is a worldwide symbol, an archetype, of both nobility and bravery. Odysseus, the epic hero of the Odyssey, a great leader with many attributes as well as flaws, is no ordinary man. Odysseus, a war hero, struggles to return home with his men. CD Odysseus acts with much bravery, as is shown in his conflict with Polyphemus, however he sometimes allows his pride to get the best of him. CM Odysseus often shows guile, being the mind behind the Trojan horse. CM Odysseus tries to work together with his men so they can get home. CD This does not work well at times, as his men act somewhat mutinous. CD Overall, Odysseus maintains a very strong motivation, and he displays usefulness in difficult situations.
One of the non-heroic traits Odysseus exhibited include being overconfident. One of the times this trait stood out when he went to the Cyclops and overestimated himself by thinking he would be able to gain goods from the Cyclops. However, he overestimated his capability and ended up with placing himself and his men in danger. Many protagonists are assumed to always be kind. Odysseus Essay: Odysseus of Ithaka. Some historians have argued for years that he is a noble hero, and others say he is just a man trying to get home from many hardship and challenges, however Odysseus is the definition of a hero. For generations people have been correct to honor the great Odysseus, for his actions along his adventures.
Although there has been some evidence that points to Odysseus not being a hero, this essay will give three reasons why Odysseus should be respected as a hero. Is Odysseus a hero or a villain? In my eyes he is a hero struggling to do the best he can but often finds things don't always go as planned. One of the many reasons I believe this is because he shows that he cares for his comrades. He tried at great measures to help his men return home to Ithaca alive. When he faced the Cyclops he stabbed his eye, so the men could get away. The crewmen then escape the cyclops's cave by riding under the bellies of the cyclops's rams as Odysseus even ties each and every one of them to a ram by himself. Another example of him showing care towards his comrades was when Odysseus warns his crewmen of the potential dangers that awaits them if they happen to harm the cattle of Helios the Sun God.
So those are just a few instances in the story where he shows compassion for his comrades and truly cares about them.
