You have probably been told hundreds of times that cramming is a poor way to study for an exam. Hopefully, you remember to attend your psychology classes and take good psychology class notes. However, even students with good study habits sometimes find themselves needing to cram the night before a big exam. While cramming for an exam is definitely not the best way to study and you certainly shouldn't make a habit of it , you can use a last-minute study session effectively to review notes and organize your thoughts. Importantly, well-being is not seen as a fixed state either you have it or not , but an ongoing process that requires constant action and effortful living to cultivate the various elements. One of the most well-known models of well-being is the PERMA model developed by Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology. The PERMA model consists of five key elements that contribute to well-being:. This model shows that there are multiple paths to well-being. An over-focus on any one, such as an over-focus on Achievement at the expense of cultivating Relationships and Meaning, can be detrimental for your well-being.
This is what makes a balanced life so important. While the PERMA model represents key elements you need to have in your life to flourish, I am also interested in what are the key elements of the person you need to be. This will include elements similar to the PERMA model e. being fulfilled , but also additional elements such as the importance of Authenticity being true to yourself and Wholeness being able to accept and bring your whole self to life. Key principles of positive psychology Below are the key principles undergirding positive psychology. PERMA Model of Flourishing Now that we know the importance of positive psychology and its key principles — what is it that we have to do to improve our well-being? The PERMA model consists of five key elements that contribute to well-being: Positive Emotion. This includes happiness, but also other emotions such as hope, interest, joy, love, compassion, and gratitude.
They broaden our attention and allow us to see the bigger picture, which makes us more creative in our responses. Positive emotions also help us build enduring skills and resources. For instance, we form better relationships and networks when we are feeling positive. You may have heard of the concept of flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Flow is the experience of being completely present and absorbed with what you are doing. When we leverage our own greatest strengths, we are more likely to experience flow, and we engage in work and activities that make us feel most confident, productive and valuable. Humans are social animals. We have a need to feel connected, loved and supported by others. In a year longitudinal Harvard Grant study, known as the longest study on human happiness, the data showed that close relationships are what keeps people happy throughout their lives.
Close relationships was the strongest predictor of life satisfaction. Happiness from pleasurable activities can be fleeting, and we find more enduring contentment and fulfilment when we engage in activities we find meaningful. This means dedicating ourselves to something beyond ourselves — serving other people, or a larger cause. He saw in Auschwitz, that how even in the worst of circumstances, those who managed to cling onto their sense of meaning managed to survive. Accomplishment is a result of working towards and achieving life goals, which contributes to well-being as individuals develop a sense of mastery and competence. Money, titles and fame are extrinsic goals, which is why people who chase money and fame for the sake of it, are not truly happy.
